Parts of Speech มีทั้งหมด 8 ประเภท โดยจะต้องพิจารณาจากประโยคว่า blank ที่ให้เติมนั้น ต้องการคำที่ทำหน้าที่อะไรในประโยค เช่น Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs,
Pronouns, Preposition, and Conjunction, and interjection
การดู Parts of Speech สามารถใช้หลักการ word formation มาช่วยได้
นั่นก็คือเรื่องของPrefixes และ Suffixes
Prefixes:
--anti- = against : antibiotic, antipathy, antisocial, etc.
--inter- = between, among : interact, interchange, international, intersection, etc.
--out- = go beyond : outpost, outplay, outrun, etc.
Suffixes:
- คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย – ate มักเป็นคำกริยา: generate, degenerate, initiate, dehydrate,
educate, elevate, etc.
- คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย – ee มักเป็นคำนามที่มี passive sense: nominee, interviewee,
employee etc. ยกเว้น referee
- คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย – ion, tion มักเป็นคำนาม เช่น education, evaluation, evolution etc.
- คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย –al, nal มักเป็นคำคุณศัพท์ เช่น agricultural, educational, etc.
- คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย – ous มักเป็นคำคุณศัพท์ เช่น obvious, conscious, dangerous, etc.
- คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย – ly มักเป็นคำวิเศษณ์ เช่น seriously, obviously, unfortunately, etc.
ตัวอย่่างข้อสอบ Cloze Test โดยใช้ Parts of Speech เป็นตัวช่วยในการทำข้อสอบ1. Scientists have recently discovered that man has latent senses. Fingertip seeing
would be an example of such sense. So would the sense that blind people use to
“hear” their locations.
